Microsoft recently has changed its stance on system and product security from a reactive stance to a proactive stance. Previously, the reactive stance has been to release product updates via an optional Windows Update feature which many users would largely ignore. This lead to fast spreading and destructive viruses, adware and spyware. Microsoft's new reactive stance started with Windows XP Service Pack 2 which addressed many security loopholes and improved on stopping many threats before they become a problem to Windows users.
Windows XP Service Pack 2
Released in the summer 2004, Windows XP service pack 2 not only fixed various bugs and issues with the operating system, but also added a few new features. Virus protection, Windows Firewall and Windows Updates can now all be controlled from an integrated security center located in the control panel. Windows Firewall was largely improved from previous versions integrated into Windows. The Windows Firewall prevents intruders and intrusion software from entering or sending information from the computer via a LAN or the Internet. The security center also will integrate with virus prevention software. This will alert users with pop ups from the system tray when threats are detected. Finally Windows Update can be set and monitored to check for updates without interrupting the user.
Windows XP For The Tablet PC
Windows XP Service Pack 2 for the Tablet PC not only integrates all the security features into the operating system, but also has made large improvements on the handwriting controls and user interface.
Other Improvements
Microsoft has also improved support for Wireless networks. First improvements with interfaces for connecting to and configuring wireless networks has been made easier for most users. Second, various bugs with the wireless zero configuration and network slowness over wireless networks have been fixed. Microsoft has also added a popup blocker to Internet Explorer which is a major complaint for most users.
What Is On The Horizon?
Recently Microsoft has also released Windows Antispyware for beta testing. This utility not only scans and removes adware and spyware but also connects to a central database and shares adware and spyware threats to all users of the utility. Microsoft says that they may eventually charge for this tool, but for now it can be downloaded for free.
Where To Download?
All updates are free from Microsoft and can be downloaded from their website. Please visit (www.microsoft.com) click on Downloads on the left side of the screen. Entering 'Windows XP Service Pack 2' or 'Windows Antispyware' in the search box can quickly find these downloads.
